Your life stays on your iPhone.

Effective June 2026 · Blackpaw Studio

Chronicle has no account, no Chronicle server, and no Chronicle cloud. Blackpaw Studio never receives any of your data. Everything you see lives on your iPhone.

What lives on your device

Chronicle reads a few things from your phone to build your timeline. All of it is read locally and never uploaded anywhere. It is stored only in the app's private on-device storage.

  • Your Photos, including their embedded date and location metadata
  • Apple Health data (workouts, steps, and so on), read-only
  • Contacts (names and birthdays)
  • Calendar events
  • Any Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn export archives you choose to import
  • The Milestones you create

What we never collect

No analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no tracking, no telemetry of any kind. No Firebase, no Google services. We collect nothing.

When data touches a third party

There are exactly two cases where data leaves your phone, and in neither case does anything go to Blackpaw Studio. Here is plainly what happens in each.

Swarm and Foursquare (optional)

This only happens if you choose to connect it. To bring in your past check-ins, Chronicle signs in to Foursquare using OAuth and downloads your own check-in history. Your access token is kept in the iOS Keychain, and your check-ins are cached on your device. You can disconnect at any time in Settings, which deletes the token and the cached check-ins. Your Foursquare account is governed by Foursquare's own privacy policy.

Weather (automatic, location-based memories only)

To show what the weather was like on a day in the past, Chronicle asks Open-Meteo, a free weather service, for historical weather. It sends only the photo's approximate coordinates, rounded to about 11 kilometers, along with the date. No name, account, device ID, or any other identifier is sent, so the request cannot be tied to you. This happens only for memories that already contain location data.

Permissions, and why each is requested

  • Photos: to surface your memories.
  • Apple Health: for fitness memories, read-only. Chronicle never writes Health data.
  • Contacts: for birthday reminders.
  • Calendar: to show events on this day in past years.

Chronicle does not request location permission. Place information comes only from the location already embedded in your photos, and place names are looked up on-device using Apple's geocoder.

Your control and deletion

Everything is in the app. Disconnect Swarm or clear imported data in Settings at any time. Deleting the app removes all Chronicle data from your device.
